What is the WhatsApp Business API?

The plain explanation, including what Meta now calls it and what it costs

It is not an app. The WhatsApp Business app on a phone is a separate, free product for small businesses answering messages by hand. The API is a connection between WhatsApp and your own software — your CRM, your e-commerce platform, your booking system — so messages can be sent and answered automatically, by several people at once, at volume.

Quick answer

The WhatsApp Business API is the official way for a company to send and receive WhatsApp messages from its own software, rather than by hand from a phone. Meta now calls it the WhatsApp Business Platform, and the interface itself the Meta Cloud API; all three names mean the same product. It is priced per 24-hour conversation rather than per message, requires Meta Business verification and template approval before sending, and requires the recipient to have opted in to marketing messages.

Three rules shape everything about using it.

**Pricing is per conversation.** A conversation is a 24-hour window with one contact. Inside it you can exchange as many messages as the thread needs for one charge. The rate is set by the recipient's country and the category: marketing, utility, authentication, or service, which is free when the customer starts it.

**Templates need approval.** Any message you send to open a conversation must use a template Meta has reviewed and approved in advance. Approval usually takes minutes to a day, and rejections are normally a category mistake rather than a content problem.

**Opt-in is mandatory for marketing.** Sending marketing templates to people who never opted in spikes your block rate, drops your quality rating, cuts your daily messaging limit and eventually restricts the number. This is the rule that ends most WhatsApp Business accounts, and it is not enforced by a warning first.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

The app is free, runs on one phone, and is for answering messages by hand. The API connects WhatsApp to your own software so messages can be sent automatically, at volume, by a whole team, with delivery and read receipts written back to your system. The app has no per-message cost; the API is billed per conversation.

Yes. Meta renamed the product to the WhatsApp Business Platform and calls the hosted interface the Meta Cloud API. WhatsApp Business API, WhatsApp Business Platform and Meta Cloud API all refer to the same thing; the older name is still the one most people search for.

It is priced per 24-hour conversation, set by the recipient's country. A marketing conversation to India is ₹1.04, to the UAE ₹3.08, to the United States ₹1.44 and to Kenya ₹1.36. Utility and authentication conversations cost less, and service conversations the customer starts are free inside their window. Meta charges the country rate; providers add a margin on top.

Yes. You need a Meta Business account, business verification, and an approved display name before you can send. Verification usually takes a few days and is the step most likely to delay a launch.

Only if you migrate it, and that means losing it on consumer WhatsApp. A number can be on the app or on the API, never both. Most businesses take a fresh number for the API and keep the old one running.

A Business Solution Provider: a company authorised by Meta to give businesses access to the platform, handle verification and templates, and bill for conversations. You can go direct to Meta, but a BSP handles the verification, template approvals and support that most teams do not want to run themselves.
