SMS vs WhatsApp vs RCS: which one for what

An honest comparison from a company that sells all three

We sell all three, so there is no channel we need to push you towards. The honest answer is that they are good at different things and the cost comparison changes completely depending on the country and on whether the customer answers.

Quick answer

Use SMS for one-time passwords and one-way alerts: it reaches every handset, needs no app and no opt-in for transactional traffic, and costs from ₹0.12 in India. Use WhatsApp where the customer replies: one 24-hour conversation covers the whole exchange for ₹1.04 in India, but it needs opt-in and template approval. Use RCS for branded campaigns where your logo and rich cards matter, from ₹0.18 in India, with automatic SMS fallback for handsets that cannot receive it.

The single biggest mistake we see is paying WhatsApp conversation prices for one-way alerts that SMS would deliver for a fifth of the cost, usually because someone decided "WhatsApp is cheaper" from an article written about a different market.

Per-country rates are on the pricing pages for each channel. Which channel wins on cost depends heavily on the country: in Kenya WhatsApp is cheaper than SMS outright, in India SMS is a fifth of the price.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

It depends on the country and on whether the customer replies. In India a WhatsApp conversation is ₹1.04 against ₹0.12 to ₹0.22 for an SMS, so SMS is far cheaper for one-way messages. In Kenya a conversation is ₹1.36 against ₹1.40 to ₹3.40 for an SMS, so WhatsApp is cheaper outright. Where the customer replies, WhatsApp usually wins anywhere, because one conversation replaces several SMS segments in both directions.

SMS. An OTP is one line, one way, and needs to reach every handset including ones with no WhatsApp and no data. WhatsApp adds opt-in requirements and cost for no benefit on this use case.

Not soon, and not everywhere. RCS needs the handset and the network to support it, which varies enormously by country, so every RCS campaign still carries an SMS fallback today. India is the market where it is closest to viable as a primary channel: all four networks carry it and it costs about the same as a two-segment Hindi SMS.

Be careful with that number. SMS has no read receipt at all, so any SMS open-rate figure you see is estimated. WhatsApp and RCS both report real read receipts. Comparing a measured rate against an estimated one is not a comparison, which is why we report delivered, read and replied separately rather than quoting an industry open rate.

Yes, and most of our larger clients do: SMS for OTP and alerts, WhatsApp for support and catalogue journeys, RCS for branded campaigns where it is carrier-enabled. One account, one dashboard, three rate lines on the invoice.
