Bulk SMS in Nepal, registered on NTC and Ncell

Sender ID registered on both networks, Devanagari supported, operator-direct routes

Nepal is a two-operator market. Nepal Telecom, which trades as Namaste, holds a little over half of mobile connections at roughly 14.9 million subscribers, and Ncell holds the rest at roughly 14.5 million. Smart Telecom has ceased operations, so there is no third network to route around. Delivery into Nepal is therefore decided almost entirely by whether your sender ID is registered on both networks, not by clever routing.

Quick answer

Bulk SMS in Nepal reaches around 29 million mobile subscribers across 2 networks, on Nepal Telecom (Namaste) and Ncell. Alphanumeric sender IDs must be pre-registered with Nepal Telecom and with Ncell separately before they are delivered as sent. Registration normally takes 5 to 7 working days. AdelSocial files the registration, provides SMPP and REST access, and charges an indicative ₹0.85 – ₹1.60 per promotional SMS and ₹1.20 – ₹2.10 per transactional or OTP message, by volume and route.

Registration is the part most providers gloss over. An alphanumeric sender ID has to be filed with Nepal Telecom and with Ncell separately, with business documents, and it usually takes five to seven working days. Until it clears your messages still go out, but the sender is overwritten with a generic ID, so the recipient sees something that is not your brand.

The other thing that moves your bill is script. Latin text in GSM-7 gives you 160 characters per segment. The moment a message contains Devanagari (Nepali), it encodes as UCS-2 and a segment drops to 70 characters, so the same sentence can cost two or three times what the English version does. We count segments on your actual copy before you commit to a volume, not after the first invoice.

Highlights

What is included for Nepal

Sender ID registered on both networks, Devanagari supported, operator-direct routes

Sender ID registration handled

Alphanumeric sender IDs must be pre-registered with Nepal Telecom and with Ncell separately before they are delivered as sent. Company registration or PAN, and an authorisation letter on your letterhead naming the sender ID you want. Normally 5 to 7 working days.

Devanagari (Nepali) support

Full UCS-2 encoding. We show you the segment count for your actual message before you buy, because a 70-character segment changes the economics against the 160 you get in Latin script.

Operator-direct routes

Direct interconnects rather than grey or SIM-farm routes, and we publish which route type your traffic is on. Grey routes are cheaper, get your sender rewritten, and get cut off without notice, so we do not sell them.

Transactional and promotional separated

OTP and transactional traffic runs on a route tuned for latency and is priced apart from promotional. Mixing both on one route is what makes OTPs arrive four minutes late.

Delivery receipts that mean something

Operator-level DLRs passed through unchanged: queued, accepted, sent, delivered, or the specific failure reason. We do not mark a message delivered because it left our gateway.

SMPP, REST and a dashboard

SMPP v3.4 over TLS for volume, a REST API for application traffic, and a dashboard with campaign upload for teams who are not developers. Sandbox credentials from day one.

Indicative SMS rate for Nepal

Where you land inside the band depends on monthly volume, message category and content language.

What businesses in Nepal send

The four use cases that make up most of the volume we carry.

OTP and login codes

Banks, wallets and fintech apps verifying users.

  • • Routed for latency, not for price.
  • • Separate sender ID from marketing traffic.

Payment and due reminders

Finance, insurance, schools, utilities and ISPs.

  • • Scheduled in local time (NPT, UTC+5:45) so nothing lands at 2am.
  • • Devanagari (Nepali) where the audience expects it.

Delivery and order updates

E-commerce and logistics status messages.

  • • Triggered from your own system over the API.
  • • Delivery receipts written back to your database.

Offers and campaigns

Retail, travel and hospitality promotions.

  • • Consent-based lists only, with opt-out handling.
  • • Throttled so a 200,000-message send does not queue for hours.

Other channels for Nepal

Same country, different economics. We price all three honestly.

Bulk WhatsApp in Nepal

Best for two-way: one conversation covers 24 hours.

  • • ₹3.91 per marketing conversation.
  • • Needs opt-in and template approval. See /bulk-whatsapp-nepal/

Not sure which?

OTP and alerts: SMS. Two-way and catalogue: WhatsApp.

  • • RCS is not carrier-enabled in Nepal yet, so we will not sell it to you here.
  • • Send us the message you want to send and the volume, and we will price both.

Our Process

01

Tell us volume and message type

Monthly volume, whether it is OTP, transactional or promotional, and the language of the content. Those three answers set your rate and your route, so we ask before quoting rather than after.

02

Send documents for sender registration

Company registration or PAN, and an authorisation letter on your letterhead naming the sender ID you want. We check the ID against the refused list before filing, so you do not lose a week to a rejection.

03

We file with the operators

We file with Nepal Telecom and Ncell in parallel rather than one after the other, and report the status of each network separately.

04

Connect and test in sandbox

SMPP bind or REST key issued immediately, so your developers integrate while registration is pending. Send to your own numbers on each network and read the delivery receipts before you load credit.

05

Go live and watch the receipts

Load credit, send the first real campaign, and check the per-network delivery rate. If one network underperforms we move the route and tell you that we did.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Alphanumeric sender IDs must be pre-registered with Nepal Telecom and with Ncell separately before they are delivered as sent. The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) sets the framework the operators apply. Unregistered senders are overwritten with a generic alphanumeric ID, so your brand does not show. Generic words such as INFO, SMS and NOTICE are refused at registration. We file the registration for you.

5 to 7 working days once your documents are in. We file with Nepal Telecom and Ncell in parallel rather than one after the other, and report the status of each network separately. You can integrate and test in sandbox while registration is pending.

Indicatively ₹0.85 – ₹1.60 per SMS for promotional traffic and ₹1.20 – ₹2.10 for transactional and OTP, excluding GST. Where you land in the band depends on monthly volume, route type and message category. A message in Devanagari (Nepali) is billed per segment like any other, but it encodes as UCS-2 at 70 characters a segment instead of 160, so the same sentence uses more segments.

All of them: Nepal Telecom (Namaste) and Ncell. Smart Telecom has ceased operations, so these two are the whole market. Country code is +977, and mobile numbers are 10 digits starting 97 or 98, with Nepal Telecom on 984, 985 and 986 and Ncell on 980, 981 and 982.

No. Marketing messages require prior consent from the recipient, and person-to-person style traffic is not permitted on A2P routes. Gambling and adult content are refused, as are political and religious campaign messages.

Good practice is 8am to 8pm Nepal time, with only urgent traffic such as OTPs and security alerts outside it. Nepal runs on NPT, UTC+5:45. Our scheduler works in local time so you do not have to convert, and we avoid major public holidays unless you tell us otherwise.

Yes. The reseller plan gives you a white-label panel on your own domain with your own pricing, multi-tier sub-accounts, per-client rate cards, prepaid wallets and invoicing. A large share of our volume is other people's customers, so the platform is built for it rather than retrofitted.

Yes. SMPP v3.4 binds over TLS with an agreed TPS for volume traffic, and a REST API for application traffic, with webhooks for delivery receipts and inbound messages. Sandbox credentials are issued on day one so your developers integrate before the sender ID clears.

You see the operator's own reason, passed through unchanged, in the dashboard and over webhook: queued, accepted, sent, delivered, or the specific failure. We do not count a message as delivered because it left our gateway. If one network underperforms we move the route and tell you that we did.

Nepal is one of the places where SMS still beats WhatsApp on price for most traffic: SMS runs ₹0.85 to ₹2.10 while a WhatsApp marketing conversation is ₹3.91. WhatsApp earns its rate for two-way support and catalogue journeys, not for one-way alerts. We sell all three channels, so we have no reason to push you to the wrong one.
